A Comedy About Spies

HIGH EYEBROW ARCH – ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Drama

It’s 1950’s cold war-era London.

A rogue British agent has stolen the plans for a top-secret weapon. Project Midnight!

Both the KGB and the CIA descend upon a Piccadilly hotel. KGB agents, Sergei and Elana, to retrieve the stolen plans. CIA agent, Lance (and his mother, Janet) to prevent the exchange.

Meanwhile, Rosemary checks into the same hotel for a conference. Her boyfriend, Bernard, follows soon afterwards with the intention to propose. Finally, there’s Douglas Woodbead (the struggling actor, not the accomplished cricketer), who has an appointment to audition for the role of James Bond in an upcoming film.

What follows is a madcap romp of twisted intrigue which involves mistaken identify, changing rooms, hidden agendas and good ol’ fashioned slapstick fun.

What My Eyebrows Told Me

The Mischief Theatre Company is a gem. I’ve already seen The Play That Goes WrongPeter Pan Goes Wrong and The Comedy About a Bank Robbery. All laugh-a-minute comedy classics.

So, I had high expectations.

Thankfully, A Comedy About Spies did not disappoint.

From the opening Who’s On First inspired scene, with Agent 0, Agent U and Agent R through to the unexpected high-jinx climax, A Comedy About Spies had the audience bellowing with laugher, with the occasional unbecoming snort, from start to finish.

And my eyebrows joined the fun in a High Arch.
